How to Choose an NDIS Support Worker Who's Right for You

Quick answer
How do you choose the right NDIS support worker?
Choose an NDIS support worker by checking three things beyond qualifications: whether they have the specific skills your supports need, whether their availability matches your routine week to week, and whether you actually get on with them. Ask to meet before the first shift, and ask who covers when they are away.
A support worker can become one of the most important people in your week, so getting the match right matters. Here is how to think about it, and how to speak up when something is not working.
It Is About Fit, Not Just Skills
Skills and qualifications matter, but the thing that makes support work is the human fit. A support worker who shares your sense of humour, respects your routines and genuinely listens will help you far more than someone technically perfect who you never quite click with.
So think beyond the checklist. Consider personality, interests, communication style and values. You are inviting this person into your home and your life, and that relationship is worth being fussy about.
Questions Worth Asking
When you meet a potential support worker or the provider matching you, ask real questions. What experience do they have with your kind of support? How does the provider handle a worker being sick or on leave? Will you have a consistent worker or a rotating team?
Ask about training too, especially if you have health needs. Knowing that workers are backed by clinical oversight, such as a registered nurse who can guide them, gives real peace of mind for complex support.
Consistency Is Underrated
One of the biggest complaints participants have is a revolving door of unfamiliar faces. Consistency is not a luxury: it is what lets a support worker learn your preferences, spot when something is off, and build the trust that makes support feel natural.
When you are choosing a provider, ask directly how they protect consistency. A provider that takes it seriously will have a real answer, not just a promise.
What to Do If the Fit Is Not Right
Sometimes, even with the best intentions, a match just does not work. That is normal, and it is not rude to say so. You have every right to ask for a different worker, and a good provider will handle that without making it awkward.
Speak to your coordinator at the provider, be honest about what is not working, and give them a chance to fix it. If the provider itself is not listening, remember you can always change providers. Your supports are meant to fit you, not the other way around.
