What Is NDIS Support Coordination and Do You Need It?

What Is NDIS Support Coordination and Do You Need It?

Quick answer

What is NDIS support coordination?

Support coordination is NDIS funding for a person who helps you turn your plan into actual services. They explain your budgets, find and compare providers, set up service agreements and step in when something goes wrong. It is funded under Capacity Building and only available if it is written into your plan.

Support coordination is one of the most useful supports in the NDIS, and also one of the most misunderstood. If you have it in your plan and are not sure what to do with it, or you think you might need it and are not sure how to ask, this guide walks you through it in plain language.

What a Support Coordinator Actually Does

A support coordinator helps you turn the funding in your plan into real supports in your life. That means finding and connecting you with providers, explaining what your plan can and cannot pay for, sorting out service agreements, and stepping in when something is not working.

Think of them as a guide who knows the system. They do not make decisions for you, and they do not control your money. Their job is to build your confidence and skills so that, over time, you can manage more of it yourself.

The Three Levels of Support Coordination

The NDIS funds support coordination at three levels. Support Connection is the lightest touch: short-term help to understand your plan and get started. Support Coordination (Coordination of Supports) is the most common level, with ongoing help to build and manage a mix of supports.

Specialist Support Coordination is the highest level, for participants whose situations are complex or unstable, often involving health, housing or justice systems at the same time. It is delivered by a suitably qualified practitioner, frequently someone with an allied health or nursing background.

Do You Have It in Your Plan?

Support coordination sits under Capacity Building in your plan, so it is separate from your day-to-day support budget and can only be spent on coordination. Look for a line that mentions Support Connection, Coordination of Supports or Specialist Support Coordination.

If it is not there and you feel you need it, you can request it at your next plan review. The NDIA looks for evidence that your situation is complex, that you have a lot of providers to juggle, or that you would struggle to set things up on your own. Your support coordinator or a provider can help you gather that evidence.

Making the Most of Your Coordinator

A good coordinator is worth their weight in gold, but the relationship works best when you are clear about your goals. Come to your first meeting with a sense of what a good week looks like for you, what is not working right now, and what you would like to change.

You can choose your own support coordinator, and you do not have to use one linked to your other providers. In fact, an independent coordinator can be a real advantage, because they have no reason to steer you toward any particular service.
